Job CARD
PPE for composite materials
Composite materials, which consist of fibres impregnated with resins, are used in many sectors, such as the aerospace, marine, automotive, rail, furniture and swimming pool industries.
However, handling these materials exposes workers to significant risks: fibre dust (carbon, glass), toxic vapours (styrene, acetone) and hazardous aerosols, which are released during the moulding, cutting, cleaning or mixture preparation stages.

All stages of production carry risks: moulding, impregnation, machining, cleaning, preparation of mixtures and storage of waste. Prolonged exposure to chemicals can affect operators’ health if preventive measures are not put in place. Workers handling these materials must protect themselves effectively against chemical hazards using suitable equipment, in particular masks to prevent the inhalation of gases and gloves that provide a barrier against solvents and other irritants.
The safety of workers handling composite materials depends on the correct use of personal protective equipment. At Medicom, we offer suitable coveralls and equipment, providing optimum protection against splashes of liquids, aerosols and solid particles.
Which jobs in the composites industry require PPE?
| Moulding Technician | Machining operator | Industrial painter |
|---|---|---|
| As they are exposed to splashes of resins and catalysts, they must protect themselves from chemical contact and toxic vapours whilst the fibres are being impregnated. | When cutting or sanding composite materials, workers are exposed to glass or carbon fibre dust, which can cause irritation or respiratory problems. | As they handle specific paints and solvents, they are at risk of inhaling toxic vapours or aerosols. |
| Batch Preparation Technician | Industrial cleaner | Composite Waste Manager |
|---|---|---|
| As this job involves handling resins, hardeners or solvents, it carries an increased risk of skin contact with or inhalation of chemical compounds | Responsible for cleaning equipment and tools, he often uses strong solvents which may pose a risk of splashes or harmful fumes. | During the storage or handling of resin residues and fibres, it is exposed to chemicals and solid particles. |
Jumpsuits
In the composites industry, coveralls are an essential piece of personal protective equipment. They provide an effective barrier against solid particles, aerosols and hazardous liquids, whilst ensuring comfort and freedom of movement to support operators in their demanding tasks.
WeeBack
Combines protection with optimum comfort. The covered seams provide protection against aerosols (moulding), liquid splashes (cleaning) and dust mist (machining). The ventilated back allows heat built up inside the garment to escape. Features a reinforced gusset for added comfort in the crotch area.

Cuffs
Sleeves are a crucial item of PPE in the composites industry, designed to protect the arms and wrists when handling resins, fibres or chemicals. They prevent direct contact with potentially hazardous substances, thereby offering additional protection against the risk of irritation or contamination, whilst allowing for a high degree of mobility and precision in movements.
WeePro Sleeve
Protects the part of the body most exposed during moulding work, whether carried out by hand or using a spray gun. It offers double protection against heavy splashes and can also be used for manual touch-up work with a brush.
Gloves
In the composites industry, gloves are essential for protecting operators from direct contact with resins, solvents and other chemicals used during the various stages of production. They provide an effective barrier against irritants and toxic substances, whilst offering the dexterity required to handle materials with precision and safety.
Herkul Grip Strong
Unique 3D textured surface for excellent grip, even on oily surfaces. Thickness and design ensuring enhanced durability, whilst offering optimum comfort and reduced fatigue. High level of chemical protection (JKPT) and ideal for demanding environments, guaranteeing both maximum dexterity and safety.
Masks & breathing apparatus
SafeMask Fit+Pro masks offer effective respiratory protection against fibres, fine dust and particles generated during insulation work. Comfortable and a perfect fit, they help to protect professionals’ airways.
