SPECIALISING IN THE DENTAL SECTOR
In the dental sector, the most popular products are gloves (latex, nitrile, vinyl, etc.), masks and gowns: all of these items play a vital role. It is important to use single-use items in the dental sector to prevent the spread of infection and maintain a hygienic environment for patients and dental professionals.
Masks
They are used to protect the respiratory tract and prevent the spread of droplets and aerosols produced during dental procedures. Surgical masks help reduce the transmission of respiratory infections, including the flu virus and COVID-19. They are also important for preventing patients from being exposed to saliva or secretions from dental staff.
Gloves
They are used to protect both the dentist and the patient. They are essential for preventing the transmission of infections between the patient and dental staff. Gloves must be worn during any direct contact with the patient’s mouth, blood, saliva, bodily fluids or tissues. They prevent the practitioner’s hands from coming into direct contact with potentially infectious biological substances, thereby reducing the risk of infection transmission.
Blouses
These are items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) worn by dentists and dental assistants to cover their clothing and protect them from splashes of blood, saliva or other bodily fluids. They play an important role in preventing cross-contamination during dental procedures by creating a physical barrier between the patient and the practitioner. Gowns must be disposed of or washed after each use to prevent the spread of germs.
Dental products
These products are used during treatment to ensure patient hygiene, protection and comfort. They include cups, headrest covers, gauze and sponges, cotton rolls, saliva ejectors, dental bibs and matrix bands. They help to absorb fluids, keep the work area clean and limit cross-contamination. Most are single-use and must be replaced between each patient to comply with infection prevention protocols.

What are the advantages of single-use dental equipment?
One of the main advantages of disposable dental equipment is that it reduces the risk of transmitting infections from one patient to another. Single-use equipment (gloves, masks, bibs, etc.) helps to prevent direct contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids (such as saliva or blood). This helps to maintain a clean and hygienic clinical environment.
Single-use dental equipment offers a practical solution for healthcare professionals. Unlike reusable equipment, which requires regular cleaning, sterilisation and maintenance, single-use equipment can be used just once and then disposed of, saving practitioners a considerable amount of time and effort.
Single-use dental equipment offers greater safety for dentists and their staff. As reusable equipment requires additional handling, there is a risk of injury or accidents during cleaning or sterilisation. Disposable equipment eliminates this risk, thereby ensuring the physical safety of dental healthcare professionals.
The use of single-use dental products is often a regulatory requirement in many countries. This ensures that dental practices comply with health and safety standards and helps to avoid potential fines or penalties for non-compliance.
STANDARDS TO BE MET IN THE DENTAL SECTOR
In Europe, the specific standards and regulations governing single-use dental and medical equipment are primarily based on Regulation 2017/745 on medical devices (MDR: Medical Device Regulation). Further information on Regulation 2017/745 is available on the ANSM website.
The MDR Regulation replaced Directive 93/42/EEC on 26 May 2021. This regulation aims to ensure the safety and performance of medical devices, including single-use dental equipment.
The specific technical standards applicable to single-use dental equipment are generally harmonised at European level and established by standardisation bodies such as the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) and the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). These standards cover various aspects, such as the classification of medical devices, safety requirements, performance, testing methods and labelling.
Furthermore, each country in the European Union has its own competent authority responsible for supervising and enforcing regulations. Here are some examples of regulatory bodies in certain European countries:
- France: National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM)
- United Kingdom: Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
- Germany: Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM)
- Spain: Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS)
- Italy: Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA)
These bodies are responsible for assessing the conformity of medical devices (including disposable dental equipment) on the national market and monitoring them to ensure they comply with European regulations. They may carry out inspections, evaluate clinical data, conduct tests and withdraw any non-compliant or dangerous medical devices from the market.
